Giants Apparently “Done” with Daniel Jones

Daniel Jones’ career has been a turbulent ride, to say the least. The New York Giants Quarterback, despite signing a 160 million dollar contract just last off season, is apparently on the hot seat. According to Rich Eisen, the Giants are reportedly “absolutely done” with Jones. Eisen went on the elaborate further, saying he frequently heard the words “buyers remorse” at the combine regarding the QB.

Jones’ performance last season was very hard to grade as he dealt with injuries before tearing his ACL on the 5th of November. However in the games he did play, he was flat out not a good starter. He went 1-5 in his six starts with his only win being a comeback against the lowly Cardinals without Kyler Murray. If we look a bit deeper at Jones' performance in those games, he is very much to blame for the poor outcomes. Jones threw for 909 yards, two touchdowns, and six interceptions in those 6 games. Clearly, these numbers do not indicate a starting NFL QB in the slightest, so it presents the question. What do the Giants do at QB?

New York currently holds the seventh pick in the upcoming NFL draft. If they have hopes to draft one of the top three QBs then they must trade up. Three Quarterbacks are potentially in place to go in that many picks which puts NY currently in line for one of the lesser prospects. Players like Bo Nix and Michael Penix could be in play in the late first to second round, but that remains to be seen.

If we look ahead a bit closer we can potentially see the Giants make a pick up in free agency instead. Multiple veteran Quarterbacks have been made available including Kirk Cousins, Baker Mayfield, and Russell Wilson. New York could potentially see another vet as a better fit to push Jones to be better instead of outright replacing him. Options like Wilson could be intriguing due to his situation with Denver having to pay him 40 million. The Giants could secure him for the vet minimum if the two sides have mutual interest.  I personally see options like Mayfield and others who would want more financial compensation as more of a stretch. New York has seemingly jumped the gun on one QB contract, and they will be hesitant to do it again.

The most likely outcome is that the Giants will head into next season with Jones still at the helm. With his contract being too large to move off of as of right now, it is unquestionable that he will be on the roster at the very least. With that said, one large contract is enough so I do not see them going out and signing a free agent QB. My most likely scenario is that the Giants stand pat and draft a Quarterback in the second round. Grab a talented player like Malik Nabers or Brock Bowers to help out the skill position side of the offense, while drafting a young QB who can sit and learn.
