Falcons Prefer Kirk Cousins Over Fields

With various rumors swirling around surrounding Bears QB Justin Fields, one of the most notable has to be the potential return to his hometown of Atlanta to play for the Falcons. At first glance many would see this as a perfect fit for both sides, especially with Atlanta needing a QB. However despite the potential reunion, it seems that the Falcons front office has other plans.

According to Dianna Russini of The Athletic, the Falcons believe that Kirk Cousins is a player that “takes them from fringe playoff team to true contender.” Certainly that sounds like the Falcons are focused on Cousins, not the speedy Fields.

With the amount of talent that surrounds the Falcons’ offense it does make both players an intriguing fit. Despite the intrigue, only one man can take the mantle and in this situation I think that man should be Cousins. People may question the decision to bring in a 35 year old QB coming off an Achilles tear, but I think Kirk has gas in the tank. Cousins' ability to read defenses and make quick decisions is something that Fields has not shown an enhanced understanding for yet. It sounds like the plan for Atlanta is to compete right away, and even though Fields may progress quickly, he is not the player that Cousins is now.

With signs pointing more and more to Cousins becoming a Falcon, I think a lot more people will come around to the idea once they see him play. Cousins with Bijan Robinson, Kyle Pitts, Drake London, and others will prove to be a lethal tandem in this league if brought to fruition. Ultimately the ball is in the Falcons' court, and we will have to wait and see how things unfold in the coming months.
