Simmons Disgruntled With Lack of Playing Time in Week 1
One of the under-the-radar storylines out of New York this past week is the unexpected benching of safety/linebacker Isaiah Simmons. Simmons, who has been a versatile asset for the Giants defense since being traded for last season, was expected to play a larger role under new Defensive Coordinator Shane Bowen. However, Simmons did not see the field in the Giants' humiliating Week 1 loss.
Simmons addressed the situation this week, calling it “frustrating” and noting that it was the first time in his life that he hadn’t been part of a defensive game plan. His frustration is understandable, especially given that he was once seen as the next great defensive star, having been drafted eighth overall by the Cardinals in 2020. Adding to the confusion, Simmons re-signed with the Giants in the offseason on a one-year, $2 million deal, presumably expecting to be a key contributor. The question now becomes why he wasn’t used, particularly when his versatility could have been helpful in the matchup against the Vikings.
Defensive Coordinator Shane Bowen spoke on Friday about Simmons’ lack of playing time, praising Simmons for handling the situation the right way. Bowen expressed satisfaction with Simmons' desire to be more involved and encouraged players to channel that drive into their weekly preparation. Bowen also stated that Simmons will see more playing time in the Giants' upcoming game against the Washington Commanders.
Washington presents a new challenge for the Giants, especially with rookie QB Jayden Daniels, a dual-threat with elite rushing ability and a solid arm. The Commanders' backfield, featuring Brian Robinson and Austin Ekeler, adds even more firepower. The Giants will be looking to secure their first win of the season, but with this improved Commanders team, it could prove to be a bigger challenge than expected.
