Cap Concerns Halting a Potential Ramsey Trade?

One of the most prominent names dominating the current NFL trade market is Miami’s star cornerback, Jalen Ramsey. Ramsey has been the subject of persistent trade rumors over the past month, yet actual movement or concrete developments from these discussions have been minimal. Recently, reports have highlighted a key obstacle complicating potential deals: Miami may need to absorb a portion of Ramsey’s substantial salary. Many teams remain hesitant to pursue a trade largely due to the significant cap hit associated with his contract.

Jeremy Fowler shed further light on the situation during SportsCenter, pointing out that the $24 million in guaranteed money has become a major “sticking point” in ongoing negotiations. Fowler explained, “Miami has been actively calling around, exploring possible trade options for Ramsey in the days leading up to the NFL Draft. There is still a chance that something could materialize during this offseason.” He also noted Ramsey’s preferences, emphasizing the veteran cornerback’s desire to join a contending team rather than just any franchise. Considering Ramsey’s age, proven track record, and status as a Super Bowl winner, this selective approach is not surprising.

Under contract through the 2028 season, with a potential opt-out clause after 2026, Ramsey’s deal presents both opportunities and challenges for Miami. From a financial standpoint, the Dolphins' concerns about the impact on their salary cap are understandable. Strategically, a post–June 1 trade would be far more beneficial, as it would free up nearly $10 million in cap space, giving Miami more flexibility moving forward.

Trade rumors surrounding Ramsey have swirled ever since Miami’s general manager, Chris Grier, publicly acknowledged last month that the organization’s intention is to move the cornerback. As the offseason progresses, all eyes will remain on how these discussions unfold and whether a blockbuster trade involving one of the league’s premier defenders will ultimately come to fruition.
