Hutchinson & Lions Eyeing an Extension
There are few pass rushers in the NFL who can match the talent and impact of Detroit Lions edge rusher Aiden Hutchinson when fully healthy. Hutchinson burst onto the scene with an electrifying start to his 2024 season, showcasing his elite speed, power, and relentless pursuit of the quarterback. Unfortunately, his momentum was halted prematurely after just five games due to a significant leg injury. Despite this setback, Hutchinson’s determination and work ethic have paved the way for a full recovery. This week, he confirmed to reporters that he has been physically cleared to play and is on track to make a strong comeback in 2025. With his health restored, expectations are high not only for his on-field performance but also for the contract negotiations that lie ahead.
Now that Hutchinson is on track to be ready for the season, attention shifts to a potential contract extension. Ian Rapoport of NFL Network highlights that while preliminary discussions have already begun, talks are expected to intensify now that Hutchinson’s full recovery is confirmed. The Lions showed their confidence in the former No. 2 overall pick by exercising his fifth-year option, meaning there is ample time to negotiate a lucrative agreement. However, the market for elite edge rushers has escalated rapidly during the 2025 offseason. Notably, Maxx Crosby and then Myles Garrett have both secured extensions, driving the top annual salary for players at this position to around $40 million. Hutchinson’s emerging status as a premier pass rusher means he is poised to command a contract at or above this lucrative market rate for several reasons. One in particular is his age: Hutchinson is only 24, while the two players listed above are in their 30s. The price for a superstar pass rusher is already very high; add in the fact that he hasn’t even entered his prime years in the league, and it makes a perfect recipe for a mind-boggling extension.
While I believe both sides would like to get a deal done sooner rather than later, if they are unable to reach an agreement before the season, I don’t believe it will be cause for concern. The Lions are dead set in the middle of a potential championship window with one of the best rosters in the entire NFL. It would not shock me if both sides plan to revisit contract talks after the upcoming season in order to maintain focus on the ultimate goal of a Super Bowl title. Until then, however, we will keep a keen eye on the situation and will surely keep fans updated when news arises.
