Panthers Place Brooks on PUP List
The Panthers placed running back Jonathon Brooks, the team's second-round pick in 2024, on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list, effectively sidelining him for the entirety of the 2025 season. Brooks suffered a devastating setback when he re-tore the ACL in his knee during Week 14 of his rookie year—a harsh recurrence following a similar injury to the same knee that he endured in his final season at the University of Texas. This unfortunate injury has delayed his professional progress, but the team remains optimistic about his recovery and long-term potential.
Anticipating such challenges, the Panthers proactively bolstered their running back depth during the offseason. They signed free agent Rico Dowdle from the Dallas Cowboys—known for his versatility and reliability—and also selected Trevor Etienne from Georgia in the fourth round of the draft. These strategic additions are intended to ensure the team maintains a strong and flexible backfield despite Brooks’ absence.
Head Coach Dave Canales elaborated on the decision to place Brooks on the PUP list so early in the year. Canales emphasized that the move is designed to give Brooks the time and space needed to focus exclusively on his rehabilitation. "It really just allows him to focus on what he's working on—which is full health, strength, best shape of his life—to give him the best chance for when he comes back to us," Canales explained. "We want him running on all cylinders, without the distraction of rushing back prematurely. This way, he can just play football and enjoy the game."
Canales underscored that the team’s priority is to provide Brooks with a clear and undisturbed path to recovery, so when he does return, he will be fully prepared physically and mentally. “That's really what this is about. It's about him just being able to have a clear focus on what the goal is,” he added, reflecting a patient and careful approach to nurturing Brooks’ talent for the long-term benefit of both the player and the Panthers organization.
