Cowboys Rookie Drawing Criticism from Former Member of Coaching Staff

Some concerning news emerged from Dallas this week regarding rookie running back Jayden Blue, specifically questioning his work ethic at this early stage of his professional career. Blue, a former Texas Longhorn and the Cowboys’ recent fifth-round draft pick, has been participating in team activities as the coaching staff evaluates the running back depth chart. This period represents a crucial window for Blue to prove himself and earn valuable starting snaps with the franchise.

However, a former Cowboys coach has publicly expressed doubts about Blue’s commitment, sparking a heated discussion in the Cowboys community. Glenn Smith, who served as an offensive assistant for Dallas during the 2000–2001 seasons, has not held a role with the team for over twenty years but chose to voice his opinions openly. Over the past few days, the back-and-forth between Smith’s criticism and Blue’s response has provided an intriguing subplot to the summer training camp narrative.

Smith appeared on the Locked On Cowboys podcast and described Blue’s work ethic as “borderline lazy,” referencing the team’s rumored dissatisfaction with his dedication during practices and workouts. This critique has reignited conversations among fans and analysts, calling back to character concerns that surfaced in the lead-up to the NFL Draft. Such doubts about a player’s attitude and effort can often overshadow their physical talents, making it harder to win trust within a competitive locker room environment.

In response to these allegations, Blue took to social media on Friday to firmly deny the claims, labeling the reports as “fake” and suggesting they were fabricated purely for media attention. As is common among modern athletes who are savvy with their digital presence, he followed up his denial by posting an in-action photograph accompanied by a cryptic quote—a statement hinting that his on-field performance will ultimately speak louder than the criticism and “quiet the noise.” This exchange sets the stage for an attention-grabbing season as Blue seeks to prove his worth not just with words, but with tangible production and commitment on the field.

Nevertheless, it is a bit odd for a coach to publicly express negative thoughts that they may or may not have heard inside the building. While I do not question Glenn Smith’s authenticity as a coach, I do, however, have my doubts about his recent comments and the decision to share them. I feel as if they could’ve gone without being spread, especially with a young rookie still trying to find his footing. At the same time, if true, I can understand why he felt it may need to be said—to spread the noise and hopefully get through to Blue as a result.

Regardless, we will see the results of this mishap in the coming weeks as we approach the season and truly get to see what Blue’s snap share looks like.
