Richardson Leaves Preseason Opener with Injury

Anthony Richardson entered this year facing immense pressure—arguably the most of any player in the league. Drafted fourth overall in 2023, Richardson possesses a rare combination of size, speed, and arm strength—tantalizing physical gifts that have yet to translate into consistent on-field success. Colts fans, eager to see their young quarterback blossom, were dealt another worrying sign during Friday night’s preseason game when Richardson exited after suffering what was later diagnosed as a dislocated left pinky finger.

Colts head coach Shane Steichen confirmed the injury, stating, “It popped out, [and] popped back in,” according to colts.report. While the injury may seem minor, Steichen refrained from providing a specific timetable for Richardson’s return, leaving the door open for potential complications. This lack of clarity only adds to the existing anxiety surrounding Richardson’s progress.

Steichen’s original plan was for Richardson to play roughly a quarter and a half, adhering to the team’s established preseason rotation. Backup quarterback Sam Ehlinger was slated to take over for the remainder of the first half, with Richardson expected to start the following preseason game against the Green Bay Packers on Aug. 16.

Instead, Richardson’s evening was cut short after completing two of three passes for 21 yards before departing midway through the first quarter of what ultimately became a 24-16 Ravens victory. He was visibly uncomfortable after the injury, favoring his right hand as he walked off the field.

Unfortunately, Richardson’s time with the Colts has been marked by both injuries and inconsistent performance. Across his two seasons, his completion percentage hovers just above 50%, and his interception total (13) surpasses his touchdown total (11). Despite these struggles, he maintains a winning 8-7 record as a starter—highlighting the flashes of potential that keep hope alive in Indianapolis. The Colts’ success this season and beyond will hinge significantly on Richardson’s ability to stay healthy and harness his undeniable talent.
