Corner Trevon Diggs Lands Big Extension With Cowboys
With much of the noise surrounding the Dallas Cowboys recently skewing negative—especially after the highly controversial decision to trade star pass rusher Micah Parsons—it has been difficult to shift focus onto any positive developments within the franchise. However, amid the uncertainty, there is a glimmer of hope for Cowboys fans with the team’s decision to secure former All-Pro cornerback Trevon Diggs with a substantial contract extension. The Cowboys have agreed to a four-year, $92 million deal with Diggs, which includes $50 million guaranteed, underscoring their commitment to retaining one of their homegrown premier defensive talents. Diggs’s average annual salary of $23 million places him as the sixth-highest-paid cornerback in the NFL, a significant nod to his impact on the field.
Diggs, a one-time Pro Bowler and All-Pro, enjoyed a breakout 2023 season highlighted by nine interceptions, including a record-setting five pick-sixes—a testament to his playmaking ability. He forms a dynamic cornerback duo alongside Daron Bland, one that could be among the very best in the league if they stay healthy.
Over the course of his career, Diggs has amassed a total of 14 interceptions, alongside 164 tackles, 27 passes defensed, and a forced fumble. It is worth noting that he missed the first 10 games of the previous season due to injury and did not record an interception during the seven games he played that year, which makes his recent contract extension even more indicative of the team’s belief in his long-term value.
Diggs had openly expressed a desire to finalize his contract extension before the Cowboys head into their Kickoff Game against the Philadelphia Eagles, and impressively, the organization managed to make that happen with just four days to spare. When speaking on the extension, Diggs expressed this sense of relief. “Well yeah, it was mostly my agent and the Cowboys communicating,” he said. “[The extension is] always something you gotta have in the back of your mind, just a little bit—it’s the last year of my contract, so it was always going to be in the back of my head.”
Reflecting on what he learned through the contract negotiations and the ups and downs of the past season, Diggs offered insightful advice. “I would say: just being patient and just learning to grow. Having that mindset that where I was at that point wasn’t where I was going to be at the endpoint. So keep driving each day, take it day by day.” His words reveal a maturity and dedication that not only fuel his own development but also embody the resilient spirit the Cowboys hope to build upon moving forward.
Dallas opens the season against Philadelphia to kick off the NFL season on Thursday, September 4. If the Cowboys want to disrupt the reigning champs’ ring ceremony, Diggs and company are going to have to bring their A-game in a highly anticipated NFC East showdown.
