Former DPOY Finalist Xavien Howard Calls It a Career
Xavien Howard was once feared by every opposing offense in the league due to his knack for creating turnovers at such a high rate for a cornerback. However, Howard’s attempt to restart a once-decorated career came to an abrupt end after just four games. The Indianapolis Colts placed the veteran cornerback on the reserve/retired list on Wednesday, signaling the close of this latest chapter. Earlier that day, Howard did not participate in practice, citing a “personal matter.” It soon became clear that this “personal matter” was, in fact, Howard grappling with the realization that he no longer possessed the passion or ability to continue his NFL career.
At 32 years old, Howard informed the Colts of his decision to retire shortly after a troubling performance against the Los Angeles Rams and standout receiver Puka Nacua on Sunday. His struggles in that game were baffling. According to Next Gen Stats, Howard was the closest defender on seven receptions that resulted in 112 yards and a touchdown, highlighting a performance uncharacteristic of his usual high standards.
Despite the disappointing conclusion, Howard’s NFL legacy remains noteworthy. Over his impressive eight-year career, Howard amassed 29 interceptions and earned two All-Pro selections. Twice, he led the league in interceptions during his time with the Dolphins, who drafted him in the second round in 2016. His peak came in 2020, a season when he delivered a career-best performance with ten interceptions and 20 passes defensed, both league highs. That year, he was honored as a first-team All-Pro and was a finalist for Defensive Player of the Year, cementing his place among the elite defensive backs of his generation. As Howard steps away from the game, he leaves behind a legacy defined by exceptional talent, resilience, and moments of brilliance on the gridiron.
